String music and low chatter filled the air as Archie leaned against the side of the house, hidden from the rest of the party. He picked at the pink rose boutonniere he wore on his lapel and sighed with relief.

“There you are.” Felix wrapped his arm around Archie’s shoulders, squeezing him. “The ceremony was wonderful.”

“Thank goodness Gio is skilled with illusion spells,” Archie said. “He got the gardens looking quite nice. Though, it figures that Maria dropped in from her vacation for the cake.” He peered around the corner at the people strolling about the gardens, and his eyes rested on the gray-haired woman wearing a soft green dress draped with real ivy. He turned back to Felix, who wore a dark suit with a purple waistcoat and a small lapel pin in the shape of a moth. Archie met his eyes and found them bright, focused intently on him.

“You look lovely,” Archie said.

Felix smiled and looked him over. “So do you.” He stepped closer, leaving Archie aware of how little space there was between them. Felix leaned in and straightened the drooping rose on his chest. “There. Perfect.”

Archie glanced between the rose and Felix’s face, and blood rushed to his cheeks. As Felix was about to step back, Archie reached for his hand and held it loosely. “I’d like to see you more often,” he said before he could think better of it.

“As would I,” Felix said. “Though you’ll have to make it past my front porch without the motivation of doomed rosebushes to guide you.”

“Of course I will. I want to see you, not ask for your help, grateful as I am for it.” Archie tilted his head back, and his hair brushed the ivy growing over the walls. “And you should stop by my apothecary. To see me, I mean. Not just because you need some ointment or something.”

Felix looked at him and laughed, his eyes twinkling with mirth. “I’ve missed you, Arch.”

“Yeah,” Archie said. He watched the way the laughter lines deepened on Felix’s face when he smiled, and something bloomed in his chest. “I missed you, too. And now I realize I might want something… more than we had before. Something new.”

Felix interlaced their fingers and grinned at him. “Let’s start with you coming to visit me. We do have to get to know each other again, after all. Maybe then I’ll let you ask me out on a date.”

Archie smiled back. “I would like nothing better.”
